Before children learn to read and spell, they learn how to become sensitive to the components of sounds heard in the words that we speak. Phonological awareness increasingly attunes this ability by firstly focusing on larger chunks of words such as syllables and gradually identifying chunks that sound the same as in rhyme. The next focus is to perceive sounds in various positions in words.
The Casey Sounds Treasure chest provides a child-friendly process to hear the sound in all positions and to begin to make the connections to phonics - ie. connecting these sounds to specific letters.
The items can easily be stored in a clear plastic container for ease of use.
It is recommended that students practice with Casey’s Association Treasure Chest and the Syllable Treasure Chest to ensure the necessary scaffolding is in place to support students to now begin with developing their ability to perceive sounds in various positions within words.
